Vendemmia is a beautiful word that stands for harvesting grapes. This past weekend I got to do just that- harvest grapes up in Carso at Agriturismo Milič and it was a one-of-a-kind experience! Carso (or Karst) can boats of amazing Malvasia, Vitoska and Terrano (usually, harvested last) grape varies that are handpicked towards the end of September – beginning of November.

Many of the best white wines in the country come from our region of Friuli Venezia Giulia! As Lucija, the owner of the family run agriturismo Milič explained to me, the grape vine has to be given space and direction to grow around spring time. “Metaphorically speaking”, Lucija was saying as we were gradually progressing towards the end of the vine,  “it will have three directions: towards honesty, love and work.” As with everything, the more love you give to the vine the more love (or in this case, harvest) you receive back. And so we did: our sturdy wooden baskets were filled to the top with grapes and their intoxicating aroma.

Agriturismo Milič is a traditional holiday farm in the Slovenian part of Trieste. You will hear free flow of Slovenian language mixed with Triestino dialect as you have your scrumptious lunch after a morning of harvesting grapes. Everything in this unique location is grown and produced by the Milič family. If you would like to take part in this experience, don’t hesitate to contact them (you have time until mid-October): info@agriturismomilic.it, tel.040 229289.
