Our close neighbor Venice, the jewel of the Adriatic, has been in the news for a while now. Not only because of the virus but more often than not because of the nature that has exploded in the city in all its beauty. From dolphins swimming in its canals to crystal clear waters, it feels like Venice has been reborn.
Here are two satellite images taken a year apart by the European Space Agency (ESA) that reveal the effects of Italy’s Coronavirus lockdown on Venice.
The first satellite image, taken on 19 April 2019, shows the Grand Canal and Giudecca Canal full of boats, vaporetti and gondolas.
However the second image, taken by the Sentinel 2 satellite on 13 April 2020, reveals a markedly different looking lagoon city. There is practically no boat traffic on the canals, or around Murano Island, due to Italy’s current measures in place to halt the spread of the virus.
We can’t wait to be able to hop on a train again to visit magnificent Venice!
