Firefighters in the UK have paid tribute to all emergency services and healthcare workers in Italy, and around the world, engaged in the fight against the pandemic, by singing Bella Ciao in Italian.

The video message of solidarity was conceived by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), which represents about 45,000 firefighters in Britain.

Underlining that the fire service “is a family without borders,” a fireman introduces the video by saying: “At this incredibly difficult time we send you, with all our hearts, strength, love, support and this song!”

Dating from the 19th-century, Bella Ciao is an Italian protest folk song which was modified and adopted as an anthem of the anti-fascist resistance by the Italian partisans.

The song is associated with Italy’s Festa della Liberazione, a public holiday which marks the country’s liberation from German occupation and fascist rule at the end of WWII that was celebrated yesterday, April 25th.
