Police in Trieste to curb gatherings on first post-lockdown weekend.

Trieste police are to patrol areas of the city associated with nightlife during this weekend – the first after Friuli Venezia Giulia eased its lockdown restrictions on 18 May, reports local Rai News.

Police officers will be tasked with ensuring that people comply with FVG‘s measures to contain the spread of the infamous virus, including a ban on gatherings.

Checks will be carried out in the so-called “movida” spots including Via Torino, Viale XX Settembre, Rive and downtown Trieste, with additional patrols in parks and along the coast.

The move follows a message from the governor of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Massimiliano Fedriga, who appealed to FVG residents not to let their guard down, saying: “Unfortunately, I don’t think that going back to normal life means doing things the way we used to. Businesses start to open up and we are starting to have a normalized life, but always taking the necessary precautions, one of which is to avoid gatherings.”

Fedriga’s remarks about nightlife echoed those of Italian premier Giuseppe Conte who said in his latest address to Italians: “It’s not the time for parties, nightlife or gatherings”, adding: “During this phase, more than ever it’s fundamental to respect security distances and wear masks, where necessary.”
