Italy Turns 70 million bottles of unsold wine into disinfectant.
Italy’s wine producers have begun turning the equivalent of 70 million bottles of wine into hand sanitizing gel after the devastating aftermath of the pandemic on their sector, reports Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
The difficult decision follows a global plunge in demand for wine due to the lockdown, leaving much unsold wine – much of it with DOC status – deteriorating in cellars across Italy.
Italian wine-makers are now making the “painful choice” to scrap their stock by distilling it into alcohol-based disinfectant, according to La Repubblica.
