Restaurateurs took to the streets this morning, 28 October, to protest against the national government’s order to close restaurants, bars, and cafes at 6 pm.
500 people were present for the sit in in Piazza Unità this morning to protest against the “unfair closures” of the hospitality industry. Small Trieste businesses argue that they are still recovering from that first lockdown, and that more restrictions could bankrupt them.

“Restart now with safety measures in place” was the request of the protesters on a sunny Wednesday morning in Trieste.
The protesters laid the imaginary tables in Piazza by placing table clothes with empty plates on the ground.

“We need to act consciously and prohibit gatherings in malls on Sundays and in public transport, without punishing our hospitality sector”, underlined president Fedriga.
While an initial national lockdown earlier this year was complied with little resistance, the announcement of renewed measures last Sunday has been met with immediate pushback and this protest was one of the many to be held in Trieste and around Italy.
