Francesco Russo, the prominent Italian politician, announced his intention to run as mayor of Trieste in the next municipal election in 2021.
With his Porto Franco agenda Russo made the announcement during the Ring television program on the local channel Telequattro. Russo said he will “make the official announcement next year”.
Who is Francesco Russo?
Born in Trieste in 1969, Russo graduated from University of Trieste and became an Associate Professor of Politics and History at University of Udine in 2006.
Former Vice President of Area Science Park, he was the Secretary of Partito Democratico (PD) from 2011-2013.
Russo served as a senator for the Italian Republic in 2012-2018 in Rome but decided to come back to his Trieste where he was elected the Vice President of regional council in 2018.
What is Punto Franco?
Punto Franco is an association that will sustain Russo in the upcoming mayor elections in 2021. A sort of “think tank” – as Russo defines it himself – that comprises many a famous person of Trieste. Among them politicians, social advocates, artists, entrepreneurs – the so-called movers and shakers of Trieste.
Underlining his credentials as a “universal thinker,” the 51-year-old Russo added: “Good governance remains a gigantic issue for Italy and even more enormous for the border city of Trieste.”
Russo’s biggest competitor in the upcoming elections will be the current mayor of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza from Forza Italia, who took office in June, 2016. Triestini on the whole appear to approve of what Trieste’s mayor has done for the city over the past five years of his third tenure.
With the exception of Dipiazza, who was reconfirmed in the race for Trieste’s top job by Forza Italia, the other political parties have yet to announce their candidates.
This will definitely be an election to follow.
