Fun as these cold, wet nights when we hunch gollum-like in front of Netflix trying to find something decent to watch are – WHEN IS IT GOING TO BE OVER??!! – there’s something a little different happening this week.

The 32nd Trieste Film Festival rolls back into town today for 10 days of the very best in East European cinema. As per pandemic rules, the whole thing is online, and you can buy a variety of passes starting from €9.90  that cover all the screenings.

This famous Triestine institution offers the usual wide range of films, but with a few additional virtual twists. There are virtual coffee mornings with writers and directors at 11 AM each day, in-depth virtual-reality events, cinewalks (filmed walks through Trieste), and a host of livestreamed chefs cooking traditional East-European food

All screenings, a collection of docs, shorts, and feature-length movies, will be shown with both Italian and English subtitles, and the whole thing is only available to viewers in Italy. The borders may be closed, but Eastern Europe is only a click away.
