“Both Germany and France are on a stricter lockdown than us but their schools are open. Why are ours closed?” Questioned one of the participant on Sunday morning in Piazza Unità.
Trieste, as well as the rest of Friuli Venezia Giulia, has been put in the strictest “red zone” on Monday, 15 March but the protests under these measures are allowed as long as the distance between participants can be maintained.
More than 200 teachers and parents took to the streets this morning to protest against school closures and long distance learning in Trieste.
“It’s every child’s right to go to school” underlined one of the female participants on a sunny afternoon in Trieste. “We are here to remind our government this”.
“It’s fairly impossible to work and look after your children at home” commented a female participant with two kids “Either the work suffers or kids are being completely neglected. But there’s absolutely no way to do both. We demand the reopening of schools for this and many other reasons.”
Backpacks were placed in circles in Piazza Unità symbolizing the students who couldn’t go back to school.
“We will be back here in piazza again next Sunday, 26 March. We won’t give up until we are heard” said the organizing committee (Comitato Scuola in Presenza) .
