Comune di Trieste decided to turn the historic Mercato Coperto on Via Carducci 36 into yet another Lidl and Despar supermarkets to “revive” the neighborhood, reports il Piccolo. The decision was followed by Triestine public backlash disappointed in the Municipality’s choice.

Local political movement Futura underlined that turning the historically renowned Mercano Coperto into yet another supermarket would be “a crucial mistake. It would mean closing down small businesses which have been historically present at the market. Where would they be moved? Who will reimburse them for their lost jobs?”

Trieste’s poet and author of bestseller Trieste Selvatica (Wild Trieste) Luigi Nacci appealed to local public asking everyone to save the market. “Mercato Coperto could become the market of the small businesses. And many trees could be planted in Barriera Vecchia neighborhood. It could remain the working class neighborhood that James Joyce really liked.”

Nacci invited everyone to sign the petition to save “Trieste’s soul”. In his post on Facebook Nacci tagged mayor Dipiazza saying “since you love Trieste as much as we do, you must stop this.”
