“The Republic Was Born”, And Other Trieste Photographs

As Trieste and the rest of Italy celebrate the Republic Day, we take a stroll down the memory lane with some of the photographs from 1946 taken by Federico Pattelani and Nat Farbman.

A female face that appears from the page of “Corriere” and is called “The Republic Was Born” is the cult image that represents today’s holiday.


The shot was published on the weekly newspaper called “Il Tempo” in June 1946; the picture was taken by Federico Pattelani, a notorious war photographer from Monza.

These pictures were taken by Nat Farban who collaborated with the famous Life Magazine in 1946- 1961.

In May of 1946 Farbman concluded the “Trieste Story” catalogue.
