Sushi, Italian food, fried fish, focaccia, hamburgers, special “bubble” drinks..….Trieste was the right place for many investors who opened bars and restaurants in 2020, seemingly unafraid of Covid-19.

New pub-style restaurant Doppio Malto offers beers, sandwiches, and other plates in the “Il Giulia” shopping centre at the end of viale XX settembre, similar to N’Joy food and drink (via San Nicolò 10), where a brother and sister took on their father’s restaurant. UAU Burger (via Carducci 31/A) also opened its doors with a little fast food, mostly burgers and milk shakes. A young couple opened Home – Sapore di Casa (via Muratti 1b), a great stop for drinks, lunch, and brunch.

Two new Japanese restaurants appeared in 2020, I Poke Sushi (via Ponchielli 3/b) and Ariete Sushi (viale XX settembre). All’Osteria di Casa Pepe opened with traditional Italian food (via Nordio 12), while new buffet Al David – La Vineria con Cucina (via del Teatro 2/b) offers typical Triestine appetizers like baccalà and sardoniNarciso, l’Osteria del Fritto di Mare (via Trento 5/a), a new place specializing in fried fish, also opened not far from Ponterosso.

At the end of 2020, a bank became l’Antica Focacceria S. Francesco (via Rossini 14), a restaurant offering Sicilian food that’s part of a franchising chain with a long history dating back to 1834.

One of the more unusual new establishments, called In Bocca al Gioco (viale XX settembre 41), was opened by a French guy who fell in love with Trieste. He serves food and drink, and has a large selection of board games for customers to play. At the beginning of viale XX settembre there’s also a new Bubble Bar, which serves special tea-based drinks with colorful bubbles made from tapioca.
