The leaders of Trieste’s centre-right parties have agreed on entrepreneur and current mayor Roberto Dipiazza as their candidate for mayor of Trieste in elections to be held on 3d and 4th October this year.
The centrodestra alliance comprises the right-wing Lega party, led by Matteo Salvini; the far-right Fratelli d’Italia, led by Giorgia Meloni; and the centre-right Forza Italia, led by Silvio Berlusconi.
Born in 1953, Dipiazza will be on a ticket with , who is running to be deputy mayor.
Dipiazza, a former large-scale retail manager and entrepreneur, was endorsed strongly by Meloni who convinced her Trieste allies to back the candidate she describes as “an extraordinary professional.”
Dipiazza said he is “happy and excited, grateful for the trust shown in these years, for the affection received,” telling us that “now is the time to give back to Trieste what it deserves, the role of marine capital of the Adriatic Sea.”
Speaking to the newspapers, Dipiazza assured: “It will be a very civil election campaign. I will not speak ill of anyone and I will speak only with projects and programs.”
High-profile candidates in the 2021 race for Trieste mayor include former university professor Francesco Russo, for the centre-left Partito Democratico (PD), and Riccardo Laterza, leader of the liberal Adesso party.
Is this an endorsement? One might connect the dots of this current mayor to FASCIST elements: his allowing of a Fascist parade in Trieste AND the open support of fascists by the Brothers of Italy party to which he leans on for his political base. I would not therefore call him Center Right!
