How can you cure a broken heart? If the expression often refers to emotional pain, we can also experience physical pain in the heart caused by Heart Failure, Vascular Dementia, Coronary Heart Disease, Heart Attack, or Atherosclerosis. Approximately 30% of the European population suffers from cardiovascular disease, with 40% of deaths in Italy and 45% in Austria related to these illnesses (Eurostat data 2015).

How can we cure cardiovascular diseases?  INCardio is an Interreg Project – a project that promotes European territorial cooperation to tackle challenges that can only be solved through cooperation. Launched on October 8, 2020, INCardio aims to strengthen Research & Innovation capacities in Italy and Austria to promote the development of innovative therapies for cardiovascular disorders by developing new technologies, concepts and therapeutic solutions that could improve the conditions of people affected by such syndromes.

At the Medical University of Innsbruck, the expertise of Manuel Maglione, surgeon in the Department of Visceral, Transplant and Thoracic Surgery (VTT Surgery) and Jakob Troppmair, who heads the Daniel Swarovksi Research Laboratory at VTT Surgery, has led to this collaboration. “The heart is exposed to similar mechanisms in both infarction and transplantation, so there are many common components that we can examine in the process of cell damage and the associated loss of function of the myocardium,” says Maglione.

To mark the first anniversary of this collaboration, the INCardio partners, the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, ICGEB, Cardiovascular Biology laboratory in Trieste, Italy, the EURAC Research Institute for Biomedicine, Biology of Cardiac Health and Disease Group, Bolzano, Medical University of Innsbruck, Daniel Swarovski Research Laboratory, Department of Visceral, Transplant and Thoracic Surgery, Innsbruck, and CUAS Engineering and IT in Klagenfurt, Austria, together with Associated Partners: the Hospital of Bolzano Cardiology, the University of Trieste, Medical Sciences, Surgery and Health, and the Merano Hospital Cardiology, are inviting scientists, researchers and all interested to learn more about current cardiovascular therapies to attend the INCardio Communication Event.

The event, which will also launch the video dedicated to the INCardio project, will take place on October 7, 2021 at 2 pm in presence at the Medical University of Innsbruck (Fritz-Pregl-Straße 3, 6020 Innsbruck) and online. Registration is required at the link.

Following the event, a social gathering will take place to further encourage networking and discussions with the scientists involved in the project.
