Several thousand people took their protest against Italy’s mandatory covid Green Pass to the center of Trieste last night after police used tear gas and water cannon against a sit-in at our city’s port.
The protest, involving port workers and their supporters, began last Friday when the Italian government introduced sweeping legislation requiring every worker in Italy to carry the Green Pass.
On Monday morning riot police arrived to clear the sit-in, firing water cannon and tear gas into the crowd of hundreds of protesters seated in front of ‘Varco 4’, one of the port’s main gates.
This Tuesday, 19 October, the protesters are still in Piazza Unità as appartently some of them had spent the night there.
Following lengthy talks with the prefect of Trieste, the leader of the docker’s protest Stefano Puzzer announced that Italy’s agriculture minister Stefano Patuanelli has agreed to meet the port delegation in Trieste on Saturday, 23 October. The government delegated Patuanelli for the talks as he is from Trieste, reports Italian newspaper of record Corriere della Sera.
The protesters promised to move to the Old Port but as of now it seems they might camp out in Piazza Unità until Saturday.
