At this morning’s press conference in the Region’s headquarters in Piazza Unità, president Massimiliano Fedriga along with Roberto Dipiazza and Riccardo Riccardi talked rising numbers in our region, ways to halt the spread of covid-19 and the insufferable protests which made our city notorious in the world news.

“What is happening in Trieste and in our region is unacceptable” said president Fedriga. “In the past 10 days we’ve seen contagion curve rise and numbers triple in Trieste and we know for a fact that it is due to the insufferable protests we’ve had here in Trieste. The people who have nothing to do with the medical world should not be spreading the news that pandemic doesn’t exist. Enough with this nonsense!”
FVG Health Minister Riccardo Riccardi added that “the numbers this morning show the increase of 10% in the intensive care units across the region. With the numbers going up our region risks going back to the yellow zone.” He added that “hundreds of participants of these infamous protest in our city tested positive after talking, chanting and shouting without the masks on. These people are predominantly unvaccinated.”
When talking about prevention, Riccardi stressed the importance of following WHO’s suggestions, even when vaccinated, and maintaining social distancing, having your mask on when in crowds and washing hands regularly.

“In the many years that I’ve been the mayor of Trieste” added the newly reelected Mr Dipiazza “I have never heard anyone talking about our city the way they do these days on the news. Capital of the not vaccinated? It’s ridiculous. We used to have the reputation of the most serious place in the country. I remember walking around the empty streets of Trieste during the first lockdown and it would be a tragedy to go back to that place.”

The outgoing prefect Valenti present at the conference added that “there will be fines in place for protests from today on and any manifestations in Piazza Unità will be forbidden until 31 December.”
Fedriga finished the conference by saying that “it is important to explain to Friuli Venezia Giulia residents what is happening. We need to be clear on one thing: everyone should get vaccinated. I am fed up with people spreading lies on social networks and in the piazzas of our region. Enough with this nonsense! Those clowns who scare people from getting vaccinated should be stopped. We should make our voices heard! To think of the medical workers in the thick of the pandemics, who held hands of people in intensive care units while their relatives couldn’t come in – ask them if pandemic exists. The problem is not the contagion rates but the people who continue to spread fake news. Enough is enough!”

With these words Fedriga demonstratively signed the petition put forward by Mitja Gialuz which aims to bring Trieste back its reputation as the city of science.

Riccardi finished by saying that the booster shots in our region are already available for the elderly and the seasonal flu shots are available to all citizens since last week. “We encourage everyone to get both.”
