After nearly 100 years in business, selling spectacular Sachertorte and other pastries, the beloved Penso pastry shop on via Diaz announced Tuesday it was closed for good.

The pandemic has taken down another business and news of this closure strikes many Triestini particularly hard as if the old core of this town just keeps disappearing.

“The past two years have definitely taken a toll on our business,” said Lorenzo and Antonella Stoppar (founder Italo’s kids). “We will however try and keep il Penso Caffè open” on the same street.

Situated in via Diaz, just minutes away from Piazza Unità, Penso is the latest in a number of well-known Triestine shops and bars to close in recent times.
