The yearly performance of Mozart’s Requiem directed by Cristina Semeraro has been a time-honored tradition in Trieste for years.

After last year’s cancellation due to the escalation of Covid-19 pandemic and consequent lockdown, Mozart’s choral masterpiece is to be performed in Trieste this Saturday, December 4th, at 8.30 pm on the 230th anniversary of the great composer’s death.

A performance inevitably capturing all the highs and lows of yet another pandemic year, masks and all. The concert has a free entrance and will be performed in the Church of San Francesco in via Giulia 77 with the philharmonic orchestra Città di Monfalcone and the chorus Insieme per il Requiem, an ensemble of  enthusiastic singers belonging to several choirs in Trieste, who get together periodically to perform Mozart’s Requiem.

The quartet of international soloists Serena Arnò, Dragana Paunovity, Yuan Zhao and Slavko Sekulic complete the cast.  Director of the performance is Cristina Semeraro, one of the most well-known music directors in town.

The stories told about Mozart’s masterpiece have captured the imagination for generations. Most of them are pure speculation, apart from the fact that Mozart wrote this music at the very end of his life, and that after the master’s death in 1791, the score was completed by his young friend and assistant Franz Xaver Süssmayr.

With its combination of melodic beauty, contrapuntal mastery and sense of drama, the piece remains the most beloved Requiem in musical history.

Seating will be according to Covid-19 current regulations, while admittance is allowed for Green Pass owners only.

“Born to Italian-Scottish parents, an explosive combination, reason for my restlessness and love for good food, I’ve moved from San Francisco, California to Trieste 20 years ago. I have a degree in Mass Communication from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master’s degree in International Cooperation from the Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari in Pisa. In San Francisco I worked for several years as a journalist and press officer before moving to Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo and other war stricken countries with the United Nations. I am a professional journalist and English teacher, I love the outdoors, exploring caves and unusual places, travelling, meeting people, the opera, singing, the scent of the sea and the whistle of the wind. No other city in the world other than Trieste can offer all this.”
