Have you ever wandered through the alleys of a town, realizing that what started as a simple walk will unexpectedly drag you into a sensory experience? Trieste in winter will wrap your soul thanks to its vibrant colors, its wispy smells, the mouthwatering taste of its food, the roughness of its precipitous mountains, and the pulsating sound of its wind.
At first sight you will be struck by the dazzling white of its many historical buildings. You will then appreciate the contrast with the dark blue of the wintry roaring sea that surrounds the town like a precious blanket. As the first afternoon hours go by, the winter sun will bend to touch the sea, turning its blue surface into an explosion of flaming red. The same reddish warmth will embrace you on the Carso mountains that dominate Trieste.
Strolling across the streets your nostrils will be invaded by the penetrating smell of the sea that will immediately reach your brain. The mere scent of the sea will lighten you up, bringing back sweet memories of carefree summers and of intense winter evenings spent in thoughtful meditations.
The scent of the sea in Trieste is eternally mixed with the flavours of its tasty winter food. You cannot experience life in a town without having savored its typical winter dishes. This is particularly true here, where you will be reminded of old traditions, of a time when farmers grew the most juicy vegetables and bred the most delicious meat. Jota is not only a simple soup, but it’s the epitome of tastefulness.
The magic of Trieste comes from a fabulous mixture of sea and mountains. Carso is towering over the town like a mighty fortress. There is nothing more satisfying than sitting on a rock during a solitary winter hike, absorbing its energy. It’s a pure blessing for your soul and for your body.
Last, but not least there’s a ravishing sound that can be heard only here. The impetuous Bora howls in the winter days shaking the city. It’s a unique sensation that can blow your mind, but that can deliver you at the same time a freshness and a purity of thought that it’s impossible to reach anywhere else.
Trieste in winter is a town with a palpitating soul that will fill your senses in the most unforgettable way.
