The daily newspaper Il Piccolo which was funded on 29 December in 1881 is celebrating its 140 years this year with a series of events.

Poste Italiane issued a commemorative stamp with the city of Trieste, designed by Max Calò, to celebrate 140 years since the foundation of Trieste’s newspaper.

“We are happy to be here today and to celebrate the first 140 years of Il Piccolo,” said the newspaper’s director Omar Monestier. “It means a lot to have all of your support throughout these years.”
From 29 December on the central post office in piazza Vittorio Veneto will host an exhibit called “Triestini” promoted by the newspaper. “We chose the post office as it’s usually where one waits and has time to look around and perhaps see our beautiful exhibit,” added Monestier.

FVG’s president, Massimiliano Fedriga, who was present at the ceremony added: “Through a small piece of paper stories of our newspaper are told. A simple statement that encompasses a lot of meaning. The stamp is instantly international- it will be sold around the world, which gives value to Il Piccolo and to our city, waving proudly the flag of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s region.”
“The stamp represents Trieste and the boy symbol of the city and its constant central place in the world history,” said Max Calò, the creator of the stamp.

Cultural Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, who attended the conference online, added that “to resist in the world where information arrives from various sources, we need to go back to three words that inspired the creation of Il Piccolo: independence, impartiality and honesty.”
Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, who used to have a love-hate relationship with the daily newspaper until the recent appointment of the new director talked about his morning routine.

“I used to wake up in the morning and go to Sisitiana to pick up the newspaper and go back home to Grignano and read it while sipping my morning coffee. Luckily, now everything’s online. Il Piccolo has a major role in communicating of what it is going on around the city and that’s why I’m gladly celebrating it.”

“We need to underline the importance of the quality information. It’s important for us but especially for the citizens. Your role is very important in this,” added president Fedriga.
