“I’ve been a part of Il Piccolo for half of my life. I remember my colleagues just some 10 years ago were against using the computer and would only use the typewriter,” said the editor of Il Piccolo, Eliza Lenarduzzi. “Now everything’s different, we first come out online with our news and later on paper. We are the voice of Trieste and Venezia-Giulia and we always try to keep up with the times.”

Mayor Dipiazza awarded il Piccolo with the prestigious “Sigillo Trecentesco”, the highest distinction of the city of Trieste, saying how “grateful” he was for all the magazine does. “During pandemics we are still able to celebrate something as grand as the 140 years of Il Piccolo,” said mayor Dipiazza, adding that “we are at the beginning of the very important years for Trieste. Many resources, grand plans, the abolition of borders with Croatia – so many things to look forward to. Thank you for all that you do. I am convinced 2022 will be full of great things for our city.”

Roberta Gianni, the co-director of Il Piccolo added: “Almost 30 years ago I came here for the first time. I wanted to write about Muggia but I was assigned to follow Trieste’s political scene and that changed my life forever. Right now we are in the middle of change which is taking place with the speed of light. I often resist change and have a hard time coming out of my comfort zone. But my wish for everyone is to jump outside of their comfort zones and to celebrate the changes to come.”

Omar Monestier, Il Piccolo’s director added: “I want to thank everyone for being here today. I am honored to receive this award, as Il Piccolo has been celebrating the history of our city for years. Come 2022, Il Piccolo will see a lot of changes, for example, the website will be restructured. Our reader is always more online, someone who wants news fast. I am a provincial journalist and I am proud of it. I believe state newspapers look too much alike, whereas we want to be as close to our readers as possible. The mayor says it’s a magical moment for Trieste and I agree. Trieste has a grand future ahead.”
