Trieste remembered Joseph Ressel by placing a statue on the banks (Rive) on Wednesday, 30 March.

Joseph Ludwig Franz Ressel was a forester and inventor of Czech–German descent, who designed one of the first working ship’s propellers.

Ressel worked as a forester in Trieste from 1821 to 1835.

He was involved with screw propeller experiments, and he tried to establish a regular line for the transport of passengers between Trieste and Venice. In the autumn of 1829, Ressel became the first person in the world to use a screw propeller in civil navigation.

“After Svevo, Joyce and Saba we were able to place also the statue of Ressel,” commented mayor of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza. “The city of Trieste becomes the city of statues”
