Verdi Opera theater returns to Leoncavallo’s masterwork this Friday, in a 90-minute production directed by Victor Garcia Sierra and conducted by Valerio Galli. ‘Pagliacci’ will be followed by Respighi’s ‘Al Mulino’ in two acts.
“Ruggero Leoncavallo’s compact and powerful one-act has come to be synonymous with the fervor of the Italian verismo style, in which life-and-death struggles play out onstage to music of heightened intensity,” said director Valerio Galli.
The cast includes tenors Amadi Lagha and Rubens Pellizzari as Canio/ Pagliaccio, baritone David Cecconi and Stefano Meo as Tonio/Taddeo, soprano Valeria Sepe and Afag Abbasova-Budagova Nurahmed as Nedda and baritone Min Kim as Silvio.
“When we think of tragedy in opera, the first image to come to mind is often the sad clown of ‘Pagliacci’,” added Galli.
Tenors Lagha and Pellizzari make their Teatro Verdi debut in these performances; they’re excellent choices to find the fire and pathos in this pitiless, quintessentially Italian work.
