A protocol proclaiming Trieste ‘the City of Knowledge’ was signed today at the Comune di Trieste by the heads of Trieste’s scientific institutions, as well as Teatro Verdi and Conservatory Tartini.

With the aim of promoting Trieste as science hub to an international audience, the city’s government and civic leaders relaunched “Trieste, City of Knowledge” project which aims at bringing all of the scientific insitutions present on the territory together working for the common goal.

Trieste has a conspicuous scientific community of more than 30 research institutions, universities and S&T centers, with a peak working presence of some 8,000 scientists. This gives the city a ratio of over 35 scientists every 1,000 workers, against an European average of less than six.

Back in 2007, the Municipality of Trieste signed a Memorandum of Understanding with local authorities and scientific institutions. The aim of this agreement was to promote active and endless cooperation among all the actors, to highlight the great richness and value of the territory, and to consolidate mutual opportunities of interactions among the partners.

University of Trieste’s rector, Roberto Lenarda commented:

“I would like to remind everyone that we started back in 2007 and it’s been a long but successful road to get here. Trieste Next has become the point of reference for Italian and foreign scientists. Working together brings goals into fruition with excellent results and I hope we can continue doing so. We have many challenges and many victories ahead.”

Mayor Dipiazza added:

“I’m excited to be here as this is the first time we have representations from all science universities here at the Municipality.  We have large resources from PNRR . When I talk about my city, I talk about Generali, Fincantieri but also about all of the scientific institutions which are our city’s pride.”

The conference ended with everyone signing the protocol, ‘Trieste the City of Knowledge’.
