The cable car project which will connect Carso to Trieste has been causing controversy on the local political scene since the day of its announcement.
The cable car project, which was put forward by the town’s council back in December 2021, will see the cable car connecting Trieste to Carso in the next couple of years.
The cable car journey will take about 15 minutes with rides departing every 20 seconds and will connect Carso, precisely Campo Romano, to three different stations, namely Barcola-Bovedo, the center of Porto Vecchio (congress center, museums, cruise terminal) and the pier IV.

After crossing the karst ridge, the cable car will pass through the inner part of Porto Vecchio, which corresponds to the center line of the warehouses.
According to engineer Bernetti, the main objective is to take the pressure off car traffic from the northern entrance of the city. The three main routes, i.e. Strada del Friuli, Costiera and Via Commerciale, are generally completely congested.
The project, which has already received funds (48 million euro) from Rome, has caused much controversy on the local political scene followed by various heated discussions with the opposition stating the cable car is not to be placed in the city with strong bora winds which would mean continuous need in maintenance.
A petition against the cable car was signed by 17 thousand Triestini but the local administration defended the project by calling it “useful and modern”.
Hundreds of people took to the streets on Friday, 17 June to protest against a plan to run a cable car up to Carso. The protesters said the process for the cable car development lacks transparency and community consultation. Referring to the broken tram, one of the protestors asked: “Why is this government more interested in building a cable car than repairing the iconic tram?”
Meanwhile, Comune di Trieste announced that the architects Massimiliano e Doriana Fuksas, in charge of the cable car project, will present it in Porto Vecchio on Thursday, 23 June at 5.30 pm.
It would be nice and inspire some confidence if they managed to fix the Opicina tram by the time this project is complete! Scandalous that after years and years the tram is nought!
