Comune di Trieste urges all citizens not to use elevators as another power outage is expected today due to the fire.
The mayor of Trieste, Roberto Dipiazza, warned of the risk of power outages due to the fire. This can also harm the water supply. The population was instructed not to use the elevators.
Fire departments from Udine, Trieste, Gorizia and Slovenia are currently fighting the big fire in the Friulian karst area. Emergency services were supported in fighting the fires by firefighting aircraft and helicopters.
Because of the strong smoke that formed after a fire near the port of Monfalcone, a production plant belonging to the Fincantieri shipping company had to remain closed. The mayor of Monfalcone, Anna Maria Cisint, urged the population not to leave their apartments because of the heavy smoke and to keep their windows closed.
Meanwhile, thick, acrid clouds of smoke blanketed the holiday resort of Grado. Two beaches were closed. A fire broke out in the nearby port town of Monfalcone. The use of an FFP2 mask outdoors was requested. In Gorizia, several hundred people have already had to be evacuated from their homes. 350 hectares of forest were destroyed in Italy and Slovenia.
