In a true to Trieste manner, the city held its annual ‘Clanfe Olympics’ this afternoon in Ausonia beach with hundreds of participants dressed up in costumes ready for a dive and a splash.

Many things are inherently Trieste- capo in b, bora wind, rebechin, and ‘Clanfe Olympics’ is definitely one of them.

Only in Trieste can a dive with a splash turn into an ‘Olympic sport’ and Triestini take this day seriously. Dressed up as bunnies, soccer players, even skiers, participants were eager to compete for the biggest splash (clanfa) of the day.

Clanfa, a Triestine dive in the water, and its success is judged by the amount of water sprayed, and how many people are left dripping. Of course, Trieste turned this into a national sport.

Many divers were from outside of the region and some even came from abroad – a couple from the Netherlands with their kids jumped in the water dressed as soccer players.

All participants were judged based on the amount of water splashed (clanfa), morbin (Triestine dilect for ‘fun’) and costume. From 5 years old to 80 years, Trieste proved once again that there’s no age (or splash) limit to having fun.
