There were violent storms in Trieste and other areas of Friuli Venezia Giulia on Thursday night with the arrival of sudden, heavy rain after weeks of severe drought.
The thunderstorms resulted in dozens of emergency call-outs for the fire brigade.
The long-awaited rainfall also caused widespread flooding in underpasses and private homes in Friuli Venezia Giulia, reports il Piccolo, with many roads impassable due to fallen trees, hampered by electricity blackouts.
The ‘alerta gilla’ is in place in Trieste until later tonight, Friday 19 August.
