Once a year Trieste’s unique beauty becomes world-known thanks to the annual regatta Barcolana, named after the local Barcola beach. This year on 9 October the 54th regatta will once again welcome boats from around the globe in what is expected to be one of the most exciting events of the season in Trieste.

While many boats take part in the regatta just for fun (you can see many folks on smaller boats drifting with a glass of Prosecco in hand), there are always three main competitors that are in it to win it. Porto Piccolo’s “Tempus Fugit”, the winner of many world-class regattas, is among the favorites in the upcoming boat competition. As well as EWOL (which stands for the “Way of life”) which won Barcolana51 in a little under two hours in 2019. The Sunday of the regatta is always a thrilling experience for both competitors and spectators.

After calling off 2021 year’s race due to strong bora winds, the organizers had high hopes for 2021 October’s regatta and went through with it. “It’s the most Triestine of the events,” said Mitja Gialuz, the heart and mind behind the Regatta Barcolana. “But at the same time it’s a global event which puts Trieste in the center of the world’s attention.”

Regatta Barcolana will take over Trieste from 1 October to 9 October (the Sunday of the regatta) with multitude of events to follow. For more information on the upcoming race, please visit their website.
