The city of Trieste received the “European Cities 2022” award by the commission of the Academy of Urbanism in London on Wednesday night.
The Awards Ceremony took place in London at the English National Ballet Mulryan Centre. The coveted award saw Italy awarded in the final with Trieste, followed, on equal merit, by Spain with Malaga and Belgium with Mechelen.
In September, the Commission of selection arrived in Trieste to evaluate the city in two days on the basis of 7 criteria: Leadership and Governance, Local character (distinctive sense of place, identity and cultural resonance), Amenities (attractiveness), Commercial success and feasibility ( environment conducive to the creation and distribution of wealth), Environmental sustainability, Community, health and well-being, Connectivity.
For the deputy mayor Serena Tonel, who was present at the ceremony, the victory is “further international recognition of the work we are carrying out for the livability, economic and cultural growth, development and sustainability of Trieste, now the recognizable and recognized capital of the area”. It is a new “success for the entire Trieste community capable of expressing its peculiarities and potential by opening up to the world”.
The Academy of Urbanism is a network of European environmentalists who vote each year for the best squares, streets, neighborhoods and cities in Britain and Ireland. Another award category is “Europe’s best city”.
