The urgent interventions of extraordinary maintenance of roads, squares, sidewalks and stairways in the municipal area of Trieste for a total of 550 thousand euros were illustrated today (Monday 16 January) in the Blue Room of the Town Hall during a press conference introduced by the Councilor for Territorial Policies, Sandra Savino in the presence of the Mayor, Roberto Dipiazza and the Director of the Roads and Infrastructure Services of the Municipality of Trieste, Engineer Gustavo Zandanel.

“Thanks to the rapid approval of the municipal budget – Councilor Savino explained – we had the opportunity to free up some resources to continue the activity on which we focused particularly and concerning the extraordinary road maintenance interventions in the northern and southern city areas, to which is added the maintenance of the stairways”.’

“The interventions that we will have to carry out within three distinct projects – continued Savino – concern the most deteriorated sidewalks and roadways in the north and south of the city and the stairways in the Municipality of Trieste (those of a certain importance surveyed amount to a fifty). We have identified 12 as regards the first lot and then we will continue with others, which we will identify later. Some tenders have already been completed and the start of the works is set for the beginning of the summer, while the works relating to the previous lots, and therefore with tenders already assigned, will start within a fortnight”.

“In the northern area of the city – Savino specified – we will start with a series of interventions for a total of 200 thousand euros including VAT concerning the sidewalks of Via dei Gelsomini, Via Caravaggio, Via Pilone / Via dei Cunicoli, Piazza Casali, the roadway of Via Martiri della Libertà / Via Udine and finally the dirt road to the monastery of S. Cipriano (in the Prosecco area) which, as it is restricted, cannot be asphalted, but whose roadway we will redo with innovative materials; Piazzale Straulino, where the parking lot will be rearranged and Via Muratori, where there is a need to intervene on the roadway”.

“For the southern area, important works for a total of 150 thousand euros concern the Valmaura area, the subject of an overall operation linked to the roundabout (whose works – said the Mayor – should be completed by 15 February) and to which these interventions will be connected”.

“The project – continued Savino – is aimed at carrying out extraordinary maintenance interventions – in line with the overall reorganization of the area and in coordination with the interventions concerning the underground services – and the rehabilitation of complete carriageways or individual lanes, even at , of Via Palatucci (sidewalks), Via Rio Primario (sidewalks) and Via San Sabba, in the section from the intersection with Via Rio Primario at number 8”.

“The stairways to be fixed (with a total cost of 200,000 euros) – Savino listed – are: Scala dei Giganti from via del Monte to via Capitolina; Joyce scale; Via G. Ressel staircase; Via Bonaparte staircase; Climbing ladder de Marchi; Vicolo dei Calafai stairway; Scala di San Luigi from via del Farneto to via De Marchesetti; Vicolo dell’Edera stairway; Scala di Barcola between numbers 157 and 171 of Viale Miramare and three interventions on Scala dei Lauri (in Vicolo del Panorama, between via Commerciale and via Ruggero Manna and between via Ruggero Manna and Campo Belvedere)”.

“In the remaining years of mandate – concluded Savino – we will go from time to time to find the resources necessary for the continuation of this type of intervention; in this case, these resources were put in place by the Mayor, who requested greater attention to sidewalks, carriageways and stairways. The work of rebuilding structures of primary value therefore continues”.

The importance of these urgent works and the particular attention paid to the state of the roads and the safety of citizens was underlined by the Mayor, who – ensuring the continuity of monitoring of roads and sidewalks by the technicians of the Municipality and the priority of intervening with appropriate interventions – hoped for even greater coordination with the companies that manage the underground utilities. “We will continue like this” concluded Mayor Dipiazza, noting that “we count 350 km in the municipal area of roads and, consequently, 700 km of sidewalks”.

The road network of the Municipality – it was underlined during the press conference – requires continuous maintenance interventions aimed at eliminating situations of potential danger to public safety and the state of wear often makes urgent interventions to renovate the road pavement indifferent.

The wear and tear of numerous roads is aggravated, in many cases, by the transit of heavy vehicles and by repeated interventions on the underground services which – it has been remarked – cause depressions and anomalies in the road surfaces. In order to preserve the functional characteristics of the pavements of the roads and sidewalks and to ensure safety for vehicular and pedestrian transit, periodic maintenance interventions are therefore indispensable, not generalized, but foreseen on predetermined road sections in relation to their state of conservation and degradation and the improvement of traffic and pedestrian safety.

The intervention areas were identified following an analysis of the current state of maintenance of the urban roads in the area, carried out by the Roads and Infrastructure Service and following some reports received from citizens, giving priority to the most urgent interventions such as: patching of the roadway with possible reconstruction of the road box, arrangement of sections of sidewalk with lifting of curbs, bush-hammering of steps and repairs of stairways with replacement and realignment of the steps, repair and installation of new railings of various kinds, repair and/or replacement of guardrails, arrangement of structures for the disposal of rainwater, reconstruction of sections of road support structures, repair of stone benches, replacement of damaged stone slabs, maintenance of joints in the stone pavement, recovery and/or replacement of signaling systems and poles and making pedestrian crossings safe.
