Milan is set to reduce the speed limit from the current 50 km/h down to 30 km/h, with effect from 1 January 2024, under plans approved by the city council on Monday. Similar measures have already been implemented in other Italian cities including Turin and Bologna. We wondered if Trieste was next?
The proposed move is designed to reduce traffic accidents and smog as well as making roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists and improving quality of life in general in the bigger cities of Italy.
However the “Zona 30” plan has been met by much opposition, with critics claiming that the cities would be forced to slow down and that the their productivity would be compromised.
We contacted the local police (polizia locale) for a comment and they said that “they believed the 30 km/h speed limit should be introduced in certain areas of the city – near schools for example – but the existing 50 km/h limit should be retained everywhere else “to prevent the risk of blocking traffic”.
We’ll just have to wait and see if Trieste follows suit.
