Trieste’s 29th Carnival Edition Is In Full Swing

It’s the most wonderful time of the year- the carnival season across Italy is officially on and Trieste’s celebration is back with plenty of events to choose from.

The 29th edition of the Trieste Carnival is back with the grand parade on Tuesday 21 February known as Corso Mascherato which will see various neighborhoods compete for the coveted Palio of Trieste.

Thanks to the support of the Municipality of Trieste, co-organizer of the event, the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the collaboration of Trieste Trasporti, the 2023 edition will be full of events and entertainment.

By popular demand, music and entertainment for the little ones are back in Piazza Unità on Saturday 18 February from 2 pm and Sunday 19 February, from 10 am to 1 pm. On Saturday afternoon, the entertainment in Piazza Unità with baby dance and group dances will be curated by the showman Mauro Manni.

In Servola, the cradle of the Trieste Carnival, as per centuries-old tradition, trattorias, taverns, bars, pizzerias and clubs will remain open the whole week with live music which will serve food and beverages only to those wearing carnival masks.

Local neighborhood parades will take place on Friday 17 February in the Barriera Vecchia at 10 am and in Borgo San Sergio at the same time. San Giovanni neighborhood will celebrate on Friday at 4 pm. On the same day Valmaura will be going festive with the show Band Vecia Trieste at 2.30 pm. Servola on Friday will have its own parade at 5 pm with departure and final party at the Gentilli recreation center.

Saturday 18 February, at 3 pm Roiano neighborhood will go festive with the neighborhood parade, accompanied by the Santa Barbara Philharmonic.

All kids will be back in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, on Saturday where in the afternoon, from 2 to 5 pm, there will be fun, music and entertainment with Mauro Mann. The event will also be repeated on Sunday morning, again in Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, from 10 am to 1 pm.

On Sunday 19 February, at 3.30 pm, in Servola, the local Masked Course will take place, open to all, with masks and floats accompanied by the Refolo Band.

The most awaited moment is the Masked Parade which will take place on Tuesday 21 February. The so-called “Palio di Trieste” is a competition in which the neighborhoods of Trieste will try to win the grand prize, however the competition is everyone to all and it starts at 2 pm from Piazza Oberdan. The parade will be commented by the speaker Maurizio Testi, who has been the official voice of the Trieste Carnival for ten years.
