Trieste is reviving its love for statues and monuments, from the grand thaler dedicated to Maria Theresa in Piazza Ponterosso which was inaugurated a month ago, to the beloved Marco the Penguin whose statue will soon be seen by the Salone degli Incanti.

The latter’s statue will be inaugurated in spring and will depict a girl petting the beloved Triestine character. Marco the penguin, whose story can be found in English here, was a penguin kidnaped and transported from South America to Trieste only to become a beloved character who would walk around (and outside) Salone degli Incanti with his guardian. Marco spent 30 years in Trieste as a familiar sight around town, spoiled by the fishermen who fed him, loved by children of the city and gaining a minor celebrity status in town until his death in 1985.

Back to 2023, another statue will be inaugurated this Saturday, 18 March at 11 am in Piazza St Antonio Nuovo and it will be dedicated to monsignor Santin, paying homage to the great bishop who promoted peace and justice in the city of Trieste in 1953. The statue has caused a bit of a stir in the Triestine community as this will be the fourth sculpture dedicated to the peacemaking bishop and the inauguration came as a surprise.
