Revisited in a modern key, the “Romeo & Juliette” conducted by Ayron Desimpelaere and choreographed by Renato Zanella left few people in the audience untouched.

The scene is set in modern day Verona, where everyone’s dressed in somewhat contemporary clothes with the dance that resemble those of contemporary club scene.

But fans of the ballet aren’t denied the full tutu experience – in fact, this performance sees the Ljubliana ballet troupe excel in the range of their repertory and the quality of their dancing.

The corps de ballet boasts an equal authenticity in modern day ballet as well as classical Petipa’s moves.

“Romeo and Juliette” evokes all the Shakespearian hauteur of Petipa’s vision, even while vamping it up with disco moves.

You can see the ballet at the Verdi theater on 22-24 March at 8.30 pm, and 25-26 March at 4 pm.
