Every Saturday we’re spotlighting remarkable local females who could change the way we look at the world. This Saturday is Sandra Renner’’s turn, an expat from Austria who after many years of visiting Friuli Venezia Giulia has finally made her dream of moving to Trieste come true.
Where are you from?
I was born in Carinzia, in the South of Austria, in a very nice city called Villach close to the border of Italy, the reason I had the opportunity to learn Italian language at a very young age at school. At eighteen I moved to Vienna to study Economics, got married, had two kids and lived there for 35 years, before moving to Italy.
A game changer!
Absolutely. During my time in Vienna I changed my career several times to find a better job and family balance, and now I work as a personal systemic coach and trainer in the field of education and stress management online and offline. I will be launching my business here in Trieste next spring.

Since twenty-seven years I have been going on vacation to the province of Friuli Venezia Giulia and it was love at first sight when I visited Trieste! I never dared to dream about living here one day. Imagine my surprise when my husband decided we should move to this region a year ago and we bought a house here.
A dream that finally came true.
It was! Trieste reminds me of my hometown, Vienna, with all its beautiful Austro-Hungarian architecture. The spectacular Adriatic sea just around the corner, the promenade along the sea in Barcola, the famous coffee houses like Café degli Specchi, Eppinger, and Illy. Not to forget about the small coffee bars all over the city which are perfect to have a short break, meet my expat friends or even read or work there.
I can see that.
I appreciate the cultural life of Trieste – I often go to classical concerts, art exhibitions, and there are very nice bookstores I spend time in. I am in love with the countryside around Trieste, the Carso which offers you a wide range of sport activities such as mountain biking, hiking and climbing some rocks, and the Collio with its famous vineyards and taverns.
What do you love most about living here?
Trieste is quite a place to live in and in the end it’s the open-minded and friendly people here which make the difference. The unique mix of the Italian, Slovenian and Austrian cultures and the very exciting community of expats we have been introduced to by the adorable editor of this magazine made Trieste one of our favorite places to live in!
