The winning point came courtesy of a goal by Napoli star Victor Osimhen in the 52nd minute, securing the Scudetto for the southern Italian city for the first time since 1990 when Argentine legend Diego Maradona led the team to victory.

Francesco de Filippo, a local writer living in Trieste, told us: “I went to Udine last night because I was very curious. I am not a big fan of football but seeing Napoli win for the third time in its history was a huge deal for me. I haven’t lived in Naples for many years now but I while there I saw the team win the first and second Scudetto, I couldn’t miss this one.”

Thinking about his hometown, he added: “This wasn’t just the team’s victory, that was a win for the whole city. For a long time Naples, and the rest of the Southern Italy, was considered poor and dangerous. That was the Naples I lived in years ago, but it has changed. Yesterday Napoli was able to prove that it wants to bring back the attention to its beauty and future. Anything is possible for us once again.”

De Filippo concluded by saying: “Yesterday I wished I was in Naples, together with my people and my city. Being from Napoli is a whole different story, and it’s a beautiful one too. I will definitely take a few days off next month to visit my hometown and partake in the joy it has erupted in.”

Back in Naples, there were scenes of euphoria on Thursday night, with the Maradona stadium packed with Napoli fans watching the away game on giant television screens.
