May has traditionally been the month of Pint of Science. Pint of Science, the largest scientific dissemination event in the world, now in its eighth Italian edition, returns to the pubs of Trieste to bring the most current scientific topics: artificial intelligence, stars and planets, alternative energies, dark matter, climatic conditions changes, mobility, psychology are just some of the topics that it will be possible to listen to in the four city pubs.
The most sparkling appointment with scientific dissemination returns to Trieste and 23 other Italian cities on the evenings of 22, 23 and 24 May.
Pint of Science is an appointment that has now entered the list of the most awaited science dissemination events. From the six cities of the first edition in 2015 to the 23 cities of this year’s edition: the rhythm is that of an engaging but informal event, which aims to make science a shared knowledge.
Speakers from the various scientific institutions of the city and from productive realities that have a high component of research, will alternate in 4 Trieste pubs: Il Grande Buffo, TNT Pub, Old London Pub and Murphy’s Meeting Point.
Pint of Science Trieste’s talks are divided into six different thematic areas: Atoms to Galaxies (chemistry, physics and astronomy), Beautiful Mind (neuroscience, psychology and psychiatry), Our Body (human biology), Planet Earth (science earth, evolution and zoology), Social Sciences (law, history and political science) and Tech Me Out (technology). During each of the three evenings, each of the pubs involved will host interactive presentations followed by questions from the public, in an atmosphere made of conversation and relax also thanks to the beers tapped during the talks.
“The past years have taught us even more the value of science and cutting-edge research and have made us understand,” – comments Alessia Tricomi, national manager and President of the Cultural Association Pint Of Science Italia – “that in Italy there is a thirst for scientific knowledge. And what better way to quench this thirst than to talk about it while sipping a good pint in a pub?!”
The numbers of the 2023 Italian edition seem to bring us back to the pre-covid situation: over 200 researchers in 23 Italian cities (Avellino, Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Ferrara, Frascati, Genoa, L’Aquila, Lucca, Messina, Milan, Naples, Padua, Palermo, Pavia, Pisa, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Salerno, Siena, Turin and Trieste) will accompany the public on the three science evenings. The event will take place simultaneously in 26 countries, with over 250 cities involved, more than 2000 speakers and covering all continents, making it the largest global event of its kind.
The topics covered will concern the most current topics in the panorama of scientific research and will be presented not only in an informal place but also in a completely informal way, allowing the general public to participate, intervene and become passionate about science more easily.
Pint of Science – history and numbers
In 2012 Dr Praveen Paul and Dr Michael Motskin were two research scientists at Imperial College London, UK. They started and organised an event called ‘Meet the Researchers’. It brought people affected by Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis into their labs to show them the kind of research they do. It was inspirational for both visitors and researchers. They thought if people want to come into labs to meet scientists, why not bring the scientists out to the people? And so Pint of Science was born. In May 2013 they held the first Pint of Science festival in just three UK cities. It quickly took off around the world and now happens in nearly 500 cities.
In Italy, the event landed in 2015 involving the first six cities – Genoa, Trento, Siena, Rome, Pavia, Milan – even more than tripled in the space of a few years. In 2019, the festival took place simultaneously in 23 Italian cities (Avellino- Sarno, Bari, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Ferrara, Genoa, L’Aquila, Milan, Naples, Padua, Palermo, Pisa-Lucca, Pavia, Reggio Calabria, Rome, Siena, Trento-Rovereto, Trieste and Turin) reaching record attendances and, after the cancelation of the 2020 edition, due to the pandemic, in 2021, to remain close to its audience, the festival was made online with a very engaging format. In 2022 the festival returned to presence, and the 2023 edition that we are about to experience sees 23 cities involved and an ever-growing number of pubs and researchers. Internationally, 26 countries are involved in literally every corner of the world (Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Croatia, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, Netherlands, Portugal, United Kingdom, Spain, United States, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand and Hungary).
All events will be held in Italian.
