The Trieste Science+Fiction Festival reveals the dazzling poster to commemorate their 60th Anniversary event, taking place October 27-November 1, 2023, in our beautiful Trieste.
The original illustration has been created by the acclaimed Italian artist Gigi Cavenago, former cover author of the Italian comic book series phenomenon Dylan Dog
For the auspicious assignment the world’s oldest and most beloved Science Fiction Festival chose acclaimed Italian artist Gigi Cavenago to design the key image, incorporating Trieste landmarks and icons, that will appear all over the city and environs and on exclusive merchandise to honor the cosmic milestone.
Cavenago, former cover artist of the Italian Dylan Dog comic book series phenomenon, now designs Mark Millar’s The Magic Order for the American market. This year he has also increased his collaboration with Sony Pictures and Netflix as character designer and background artist for animated films and series. About his design Cavenago said, “The space cruisers are back in the skies of the San Giusto Castle stronghold. An outpost of the new inhabitants of a futuristic Earth awaits them, holding high the halberd, the banner of the city of Trieste”.
Founded in Trieste in the year 2000, the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival has picked up the legacy of the Trieste International Science Fiction Festival which was the first genre film festival in Italy when it started in 1963. 60 years later, Trieste’s commitment to adventurous genre filmmaking has never been stronger. Major events are planned to celebrate the sparkling Diamond Jubilee and more films than ever will be premiered to showcase the state of the Science Fiction art, ensuring the internationally renowned Trieste Science+Fiction Festival will continue to be a ground-breaking, influential and dynamic cinematic occasion.
As always, the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival programme will be enriched by numerous popular strands: Mondofuturo, curated encounters between science and fiction hosted by celebrities from both of those worlds, IVIPRO Days, the annual appointment with the videogame industry as a resource to tell the stories of local territories and cultural heritage, the Fantastic Film Forum, where genre professionals discuss their key roles, and city-wide exhibitions of associated art.
Artistic Director Alan Jones said, “In 2022 we went ‘Back to the Superfuture’ to reclaim a genre purity for Trieste Science+Fiction Festival. Now for its glittering 60th Anniversary we ‘Enter the Hyperfuture’ for a rocket-fuelled Five Day Wonder that will build on our signature creativity and ingenuity in providing the best Science Fiction Fantasy entertainment in the world. Trieste Science+Fiction Festival at 60 will be an experience for all ages and one for the ages”.
THE TRIESTE SCIENCE+FICTION FESTIVAL
Founded in Trieste in the year 2000, the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival has picked up the legacy of the Trieste International Science Fiction Festival the first genre film festival in Italy and one of the first in Europe, which took place from 1963 to 1982 becoming the most important science fiction and fantastic movie festival in Italy. Movies, television, new media, literature, comics, music, visual and performative art are all part of the festival’s exploration of the wonders of possible worlds.
The list of the many prestigious international guests of the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival from 2000 to date include: Neil Gaiman, Pupi Avati, Dario Argento, Jimmy Sangster, John Landis, Lamberto Bava, Terry Gilliam, Enki Bilal, Joe Dante, Jean “Moebius” Giraud, Ray Harryhausen, Christopher Lee, Roger Corman, George Romero, Alfredo Castelli, Gabriele Salvatores, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Bruce Sterling, Rutger Hauer, Sergio Martino, Douglas Trumbull, Phil Tippett, Brian Yuzna and Neil Marshall.
Trieste Science+Fiction Festival is organized by the film and audiovisual research and experimentation Centre La Cappella Underground with the support and collaboration of: MIC – Direzione Generale Cinema e Audiovisivo, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional authority, PromoTurismo FVG, the Trieste municipality, Trieste University, the Kathleen Foreman Casali charity Foundation.
Trieste Science+Fiction Festival is an official member of the Méliès International Festivals Federation board, of AFIC – Associazione Festival Italiani di Cinema and of EURASF, European Network of Science film festivals. The festival is also part of the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional authority three-year projects of international scope in the field of cinema and is promoted by the main local scientific institutions: AREA Science Park, ICGEB, ICTP, INAF – the Trieste Astronomical Observatory, IS Immaginario Scientifico – Science Centre, OGS, SISSA.
The main venue of the 23rd edition, thanks to the collaboration of the Trieste municipality and of the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia, will be the Politeama Rossetti theater. The Trieste Casa del Cinema, home to all the most important local film and culture associations, is headquarters of the Festival and, in collaboration with the Miela Theatre, will be the venue of the collateral sections, while other events and special programs will take place at the Ariston Cinema.
