‘The Merry Widow’ in concert lights up Teatro Verdi’s stage this Saturday, 3 June at 8.30 pm.
The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe in German) is an operetta by the Austro-Hungarian composer Franz Lehár. The librettists, Viktor Léon and Leo Stein, based the story on an 1861 comedy play, L’attaché d’ambassade (The Embassy Attaché) by Henri Meilhac.
Selma Pasternak lights up the Verdi stage as Hanna Glawari, the fabulously wealthy widow of the title in Lehár’s beloved operetta, set in Paris and seen in a glittering production directed by Romolo Gessi.
Andrea Binetti is Danilo, Hanna’s former flame, who is supposed to woo and marry her in order to keep her fortune in their home country of Pontevedro. Federica Vinci sings Valencienne, the flirtatious young wife of the Pontevedrian ambassador in Paris, Baron Zeta, played by Max Rene’ Cosotti, and Gillene Munguia is her suitor, Camille.
Verdi Theater has seen a significant operatic revival in recent years and will delight the audience with the three operettas this summer.
The Merry Widow in concert is an operetta to watch, listen and watch again. You can do so this Saturday, 3 June at 8.30 pm. Tickets cost 20 euros.
