Around an hour’s drive from Udine, deep inside the wilderness of Ampezzo Botanical Garden, is the mystical and sensory experience known as, Lumina Milia or a Thousand in English. Inspired by the light walks of Canada, Lumina Milia is a first for Italy and currently the only one in the country.
What sets it apart is its fresh and new perspective. Instead of the loud musical and theatrical displays that can be found during the Canadian walks, Lumina Milia’s opts for a tranquil and isolated immersion. A focus on the natural is the key element here with a space provided for adventurers to nourish their souls, engage with the legends of the land, and connect back in with the roots of nature.
Lumina Milia is full of intriguing quests and exploration, but the adventure doesn’t just begin at the garden. Rather it commences by car through the winding and picturesque alpine region. Pass by quaint little towns, gushing rivers and scenic views, all there to pique your curiosity. As the journey draws nearer to the wilderness, feelings of anticipation and excitement begin to ensue. Wind through a narrow mysterious path surrounded by tall beech trees and arrive at wooden gates to be greeted by your humble and noble guide.
Once inside the botanical garden, under the shadow of the night, golden luminous paths and a few handheld lamps light the way. Lumina Milia thrives on mystery, and secrets are to be found in every corner. So, take your time as you wander, searching for clues and feel the presence of otherworldly beings. Traverse over a variety of eco systems from the forests and meadows to the Teria Torrent, where many still believe today are inhabited by water nymphs called, Aganis. Continue to explore all 7 areas of the circular route for 1.5 kilometres and arrive to enjoy either a cold or warm beverage awaiting you.
To maintain a magical atmosphere, access to Lumina Milia is limited and reservation is essential. Through spring, summer and autumn (May – November) you’ll find the garden open at night-time, but as the autumn leaves begin to fall so does the illuminating magic and the wooden gates are shut until after winter.
Lumina Milia is an exciting adventure and unique experience, that can be viewed during the day or night. The layout is renewed regularly so with each visit to garden you will be filled with new delights, surprises, and scenes to explore.
