The future of Wärtsilä workers, after the group decided to ramp down manufacturing in Trieste last summer, and to centralize its 4-stroke engine manufacturing in Europe to Vaasa, Finland, remains uncertain. Ending the manufacturing in Trieste has impacted approximately 450 employees.
The national government is determined to defend the industrial site of Bagnoli della Rosandra and its workers but the minister, Adolfo Urso, who was present in Trieste on Friday 23 June, was cautious when asked to know the names of possible buyers.
Several hypotheses had been made by groups interested in acquiring the site, but the only company left on the table is an Italian start-up, with a capital of 7 million euros, considered unsuitable, and on this the minister was clear.
The president of the region Massimiliano Fedriga was also cautious but reassuring.
On Friday morning the unions met the workers during the strike, promising not to accept the redundancy fund without the guarantee of a serious industrial plan for the revitalization of the site.
