Barcolana 2023’s poster has been revealed by the president of Società Velica Barcola Grignano, Mitja Gialuz. The manifesto’s designer commissioned by Illy coffee is Judy Chicago.
Flower petals, which symbolize femininity and natural beauty, become sails for the Barcolana. Sport and art merge, creating an increasingly broad and inclusive message.
After Michelangelo Pistoletto (2015), Gillo Dorfles (2016), Maurizio Galimberti (2017), Marina Abramović (2018), Olimpia Zagnoli (2019), Lorenzo Mattotti (2020), Ron Arad (2021) and Matteo Thun (2022), illycaffè which is entrusted with the artistic direction for the creation of the Barcolana poster, has chosen an exceptional artist for the 55th edition of the largest regatta in the world, the American icon of feminist art Judy Chicago. A powerful choice, which thus makes the commitment of the event in relation to the theme of female empowerment even more symbolic through art.
Indeed, Judy Chicago highlighted the regatta’s commitment to inclusiveness and female leadership, transforming the petals that for fifty years have represented femininity and natural beauty in her works of art into sails and showing how art and sport can set the same goals of raising awareness, together creating a strong appeal to the role of women in society and inclusive sport.
“My entire career is dedicated to avoiding the erasure of women’s history and to creating art with meaning. My collaboration with illy and the Manifesto created for Barcolana 2023, I hope illustrate that art can be a means of transformation for social change and intellectual growth. I am thrilled that Illy shares this same vision with me,” said artist Judy Chicago.
Barcolana’s dates for 2023 are 29 September – 8 October.
