Every Saturday we’re spotlighting remarkable local females who could change the way we look at the world. This Saturday is Barbara Pernar’s turn, a famous local DJ whose recognizable voice can be heard daily on Radio Punto Zero (101.1 FM, if you’re in Trieste). Barbara’s also a mom and a passionate traveler. We interviewed her to see how she manages to combine all of her passions.
Are you from Trieste?
Yes, I was born here and I can definitely describe myself as a proud Triestina.
What do you love about living here?
First and foremost, the sea. Not a day goes by when I don’t look at it. I love it when it’s perfectly blue on a summer’s day or gray with clouds over it. Not to mention when the dark bora comes to town and makes it choppy. Apart from the sea, I adore the Carso area and its wild nature.
How did you start working at a radio station? Has this always been your dream?
When I told my friends that I started working at the radio station nobody was surprised, I’ve always been chatty! Yes it was my dream, I interned at the Radio Punto Zero when I was studying science of communication at the University of Trieste 20 years ago and…Well, I’m still here.
You have 3 kids. Is it difficult to juggle between work and family? How do you manage?
I can’t lie, it’s very difficult to manage family duties, children and the work routine. My husband and I are in the same field of work, so we understand the challenges very well and try to support each other to the best of our abilities. To be prepared and have a plan “B” for every unexpected commitment is the most important thing.
What are you currently listening to, either music or podcast?
I listen to music more than I do to podcasts, as I am always on the lookout for new trends. Also, listening to music is my favorite way to relax! Right now I’m listening to the latest Italian hits. I like Tananai and Lazza the best.
Where do you go in Trieste or FVG when you need some relaxation?
I love going to Val Rosandra for a long walk, or to Prosecco where “Sentiero Natura” starts – you begin to walk in the Carso and you finish in the wonderful Miramare park by the sea. Spring is the best time of the year for this walk.
What are your recommendations for things to see in Friuli Venezia Giulia?
I can hands down recommend my favorite mountain spots, Valbruna and Saisera, where you can really feel the greatness of nature and at the same time discover where World War One took place.
Let’s talk travel…where’s on your list for 2023?
Italy is at the top of my list. This year we would like to visit Naples and Sardinia. But we would also like to come back to Croatia, where my mum was born and that’s the place I call my second “home”.
