Fish Very Good: fresh, local, and genuine. This initiative that looks for sustainable fishing and commerce brings this weekend various cultural and social events.

“Do not always choose the usual fish. Our sea is rich in many species, each with its own qualities, organoleptic characteristics and seasonality,” -as the first paragraph on the official website of Fish Very Good, the project that promotes local over imported fish, states.

The goal is to motivate people to purchase and choose our sea while improving fishing activities and places, and the aquaculture in Friuli Venezia Giulia. FVGF is part of the Local Development Plan and is financed by the EU Funding for Maritime and Fisheries Feamp.

One of the main goals is to raise Italian, and international, environmental awareness. The coordinators created various events such as museum visits, cooking shows, and even touristic attractions. There are many expectations for this new edition after the positive response last year.

The 2023 edition starts tonight in Piazza del Ponterosso, with a cooking show. During the weekend 14 cooking shows are scheduled, and with that, some knowledge about the fish species in Friuli Venezia Giulia will be served, too. Also, this year the collaboration takes a new direction, setting up an educational fish market, which will teach how to recognize seasonality and other characteristics in a dish. Saturday and Sunday are focused on fishing tradition, offering short free guided tours throughout Trieste.

Fish Very Good is working hard, but they know there’s still too much to do. Some issues, part of the conversation, are the product transformation and the knowledge of fish products (or the lack of it). Sometimes the market conditions, the logistics, the organization, and external factors do not allow to give the right value to a product, as the low farmers’ pay. As an answer, FVG wants to support direct sales by fishermen and fish farmers.

The challenge is bringing realities strong enough to promote the richness of the seas and lagoons nearby. Sustainability is just around the corner and making local change can turn into a global action.
