More than 200 people gathered on Sunday morning in Marina Julia, Monfalcone for the flash mob organized by the Monfalcone Interethnic Association, an event in response to the statements made by the mayor of Monfalcone, Anna Maria Cisint, regarding the possible ban of bathing in clothing.
The demonstration saw a mixed participation of locals and members of the Bengali community. Also present were the regional councilor Enrico Bullian, accompanied by his colleagues Moretti and Fasiolo of the Democratic Party, the Palmarina councilor Silvia Savi and the Monfalcone municipal councilors Morsolin, Saullo, Giurissa and Bhuyan of the Democratic Party and Tomasella and Zoff respectively of Turriaco and San Canzian.
The municipal councilor of Monfalcone, Giurissa, criticized the mayor’s approach to the question, underlining that “the theme of religious fundamentalism is serious and complex and cannot be dismissed with a midsummer joke, especially by those who represent an institution.”
“A beautiful demonstration, an important sign given by the fact that there were both Italians and Bangladeshis – added Alessandro Saullo of La Sinistra -. Everything took place in a very calm and unified way on both sides in a cheerful atmosphere”. For Saullo, the initiative was an opportunity to “bring the dimension of the sea back to that of freedom and tranquillity: the sea is a place for everyone, we wanted to give a united idea of freedom”.
The flash mob was created in response to Monfalcone mayor’s recent statements.
