A couple of weeks after the mayor of Monfalcone wrote an open letter to the local Muslim community, saying bathing fully clothed on beaches is ‘unacceptable’, a couple of Muslim women were stopped from bathing fully clothed this past Sunday, 13 August, in the central Pedocin beach.

The women had entered the women-only section of the Lido Pedicin beach, Europe’s only segregated beach, with a wall separating men from women and children.

Female Italian bathers protested with one saying “they’ve been around the city all day in those clothes and it’s not hygienic, I’m a clean person”.

The Muslims asked for clarification from the beach management but were told that there was no regulation on the issue.

They are expected to try again at another beach in the northeastern city soon, reports ANSA.
