Friuli Venezia Guilia is every nature lover’s dream. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the big city life, the alpine terrain breathes fresh air into any hiker’s lungs. Scenic views are a treasure in any season, with summertime truly favored among the locals. As the sun brings vitality, Friuli begins to awaken; gushing rivers become bathing pools and pine trees provide a cool refuge. Now it’s time for the holidays and adventures can be seen everywhere!

Any new arrivals to Friuli Venezia Guilia will soon become acquainted with the famous, Laghi di Fusine. Situated close to the Slovenian and Austrian border, a spectacular convergence of nature’s finest display; two beautiful lakes of glacial origin, against the panoramic backdrop of Monte Mangart. Not only one of the most majestic mountains in the Julian Alpes, but Mangart also acts as a natural border between Italy and Slovenia. Surrounded by unspoilt nature, hiking trails abound at Laghi di Fusine. For an easier passage explore the upper or lower lakes, or why not both?

For those looking for a challenge an ascent to Luigi Zacchi Refuge or beyond is also available. Escape into the unspoilt nature of the Alps and witness the beauty of the beech and fir woods. The summertime tends to draw a large crowd at Laghi di Fusine, due to its enticing beauty. Parking will cost you a small 4 euro and it will be worth every penny.

The beautiful path “Ta Lipa Pot,” in the local Resian dialect, is in the Julian pre-Alps and will provide shelter from those intense summer days. The pristine environment of waterfalls, streams and undergrowth, is there to enchant and inspire. La Tipa Pot is around a 2 hour and 50-minute circular route, starting and ending at Stolvizza Hamlet (Arrotina Square).

The path is simple, scenic and suitable for children. Choose from two trails, one 5km in length and another slightly longer of around 8 km. The entire trail is clearly signposted and very easy to navigate. During the hike connect with nature, culture and the history of Val Resia.

Begin the journey downhill on a comfortable mule track. After reaching Malicen Brooke, quench your thirst from a fresh stream, a perfect remedy for the summer heat! Walk over suspended wooden bridges, pass an old lime factory and witness Mount Canin in all its glory. Travel through winding paths in a pristine environment of waterfalls, streams and undergrowth.

Ascend toward houses, passing by vegetable gardens and arrive back onto the paved roads of the charming Arrotina Square. Ta Lipa Pot is a wonderful adventure that covers a variety of scenic displays. Get away from the scorching heat and enjoy some history among the cooler pastures and icy streams.

For those thrill seekers anticipating a demanding trail, high up in the Carnic mountains reside, Lake Dimon, Monte Paularo and Avostanis Lake. The Dimon region is every hiker’s dream with a beautiful climb, in a unique terrain, that produces truly awe-inspiring views. One of only several in Friuli Venezia, its geological origins are in fact volcanic. Green sandstone, shale, red and green slate, and volcanic rocks are ever present throughout the hike.

There are several starting points in the Dimon region; although, Castello di Valdajer is a popular choice. Begin the journey with a relaxed stroll to an exquisite sight of emerald greens at the glacial erosion basin, Lake Dimon.

Bask in the blissful serenity with the sound of the whispering breeze and whistling marmots. Hike further to Monte Paularo and enjoy a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the Dimon region. Dependent on the weather the Julian Alpes and Dolomites might make an appearance! Take an optional detour towards Pramosio Pass and see military caves and trenches from the Great War. Return to the forest track and arrive at Lake Avostanis.

A solid limestone wall closes the north by roughly 100 meters high and 300 meters wide, where you’ll often find groups of rock climbers training. Continue the winding trail through the valley to Cleulis and Paluzza, arriving after some time at Castello di Valdajer. This trail is very difficult and will take you around 8 hours. If this hike seems arduous, a variety of shorter trails can be found to Lake Dimon and Lake Avostanis.

The region is bursting with hiking and picnic options for solo travelers, or small organized groups to make pilgrimages into the mountains. Summer imparts many festive past times in Friuli that are certainly not to be missed, but the cooling waters and crisp fresh air of the mountains will leave you wanting more. Run away to the calls of the mountains and find your true north.
