On Wednesday 13 September 2023, the official start of the school year according to the FVG regional calendar, the Traffic Enforcement Grandparents of the Municipality of Trieste, also affectionately known as Paletta Grandparents, have taken up service.

The assistance service for elementary school children (now primary schools) near pedestrian crossings is now a consolidated reality reserved for those over 50 who request it and who meet certain psycho-physical requirements: grandparents are present at school entry and exit times throughout the school year and often become a familiar figure for the little ones and the parents who accompany them.

The first 43 collaborators took up service from 13 September; the remaining 14 (there are 57 in total) still have to undergo a personal interview and follow a short training course to be operational from next Monday 18 September.

The surveillance service covers the closest crossings of 36 primary schools in the Municipality that have requested it. Obviously, nursery schools and schools higher than primary are not included in the service.

The comment of the Councilor for city security policies, Caterina de Gavardo: “I want to sincerely thank the citizens who, like every year, make their time, their energy and their reassuring presence available, to offer citizens this service, requested and highly appreciated by parents, but also fundamental for the little ones, in their growth towards autonomy”.
