“The future begins tonight at Castello di San Giusto”. Thus wrote Piccolo on 6 July 1963 on the occasion of the inauguration of the first edition of the Trieste International Science Fiction Film Festival, the first event in the world dedicated to science fiction cinema.
The Festival continued successfully until 1982, being held in the month of July in the Cortile delle Milizie of the Castle of San Giusto. Having disappeared for almost twenty years, it was reborn from its ashes at the dawn of the new millennium as the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, changing location and time of year. It is still one of the most important genre festivals internationally and is curated by La Cappella Underground.
To celebrate 60 years since the birth of the International Science Fiction Film Festival, the Municipality of Trieste in co-organization with La Cappella Underground brings science fiction back to the Castle of San Giusto with the exhibition Alabarde Spaziali. 60 years of Festival and Science Fiction in Trieste, which tells the history of the Festival starting from its origins and the evolution of over a century of science fiction cinema. Vintage shots and original photo buses of the films that made the history of the Festival, a video gallery dedicated to cinematic science fiction in all its forms, stage costumes, memorabilia and other surprises will await the “visitors” of the Castle.
The exhibition can be visited from 16 September 2023 to 4 February 2024 during the opening hours of the San Giusto Castle and at no additional cost to the Museum entrance ticket.
